WVIZ to carry In the Life

First off this month, an early holiday present. Thanks to your efforts, WVIZ Channel 25 program manager Bob Olive reports that the station will carry the new, national gay variety show In the Life. The premiere installment of In the Life, hosted by comedian Kate Clinton and featuring actor and comedian Lily Tomlin, Bewitched star Dick Sargent, and Garrett Glaser of Entertainment Tonight, will go on the air Sunday, January 17 at 11:30 p.m. Other installments will air in the same time slot, near the middle of each month. WVIZ will carry the show on a continuing basis depending on viewer support. Call WVIZ at 398-2800 to thank them when the show airs and please remember WVIZ during their fund raising efforts. Again, our thanks at GayWaves to all of you who contacted WVIZ to let them know that you wanted them to carry In the Life.

All day, all gay, WRUW 91.1 FM on your dial. Well, we at GayWaves can't say that now, but Denver's KGAY can. The allgay Denver station signed on the air this month and is playing a mix of news, commentary, music by lesbian, gay and bisexual artists and dance tunes. KGAY is reported to be available nationwide via satellite. We here at GayWaves offer our heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to the pioneers at KGAY.

ABC's Prime Time Live recently did a "hidden camera" report on the pervasivness of racial bigotry in the country. The camera recorded and contrasted the way white people, in every day encounters, interacted with a black person and a white person. Prime Time is now looking for volunteers for another "hidden camera" report, this time examining homophobic attitudes by looking at the way people interact with gay people. If you are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or even straight, and would like to volunteer, contact Aubrey Wertheim, services director of the Lesbian-Gay Community Services Center at 522-1999.

The National Enquirer is running a reader poll about whether lesbians, gays and bisexuals should be allowed to serve in the military. Readers are asked to send their opinion to: Military, C/O National Enquirer, Lantana, Florida 33464.

More thanks this month to Entertainment Weekly and Time magazines for their recent coverage of lesbian, gay and bisexual issues. Entertainment Weekly honored World AIDS Day by paying tribute all those in the entertainment community who died of complications due to AIDS in the past year. The five page tribute in the November 27 edition featured pictures and short profiles of 102 artists and performers who have lost their lives in 1992. This edition of Entertainment Weekly also reported that the BBC documentary on the royal family, Elizabeth R, cut scenes showing princess Diana wearing an AmFAR T-

shirt and red ribbon that showed her support for the fight against AIDS.

In December, Entertainment Weekly reported on the start of Philadelphia, the first major studio production of a film about AIDS. Written by Ron Nyswaner, Philadelphia stars Tom Hanks as gay man fired from his job because he has AIDS, Denzel Washington as his attorney and Mary Steenburgen as the company's chief lawyer. The film's director, Jonathan Demme, denies suggestions that the film is a deliberate attempt to make up for criticism from the gay community for his portrayal of gays in Silence of the Lambs, but does agree that "there is a terrible void of positive gay characters in American movies." Entertainment Weekly states that the film's theme is that homophobia is as dangerous as the AIDS virus itself. When David M. Smith, president of GLAAD-Los Angeles, read the script, he predicted that "when straight people see this movie they're going to be privy to what the gay community has been going through for the past 12 years."

The magazine also reported on drag diva Ru Paul's new video, Supermodel, the threatened celebrity boycott of Colorado over its recently passed homophobic amendment to the state constitution, and a profile of gay author Armisted Maupin and his new book Maybe The Moon. They also ran a full page public service cartoon ad by DC Comics in which the Green Lantern stops a mob from bashing a gay couple, educates them about being gay, and admonishes them to learn the truth about AIDS.

Time magazine, in its November 30 edition, ran a major article on gays and women in the military entitled “a mind-set under siege" and a profile of lesbian tennis star Martina Navratilova entitled The Lioness In Winter, by William A. Henry III. Time also reported on what the new Roman Catholic catechism has to say about lesbians and gays, the London opening of the musical stage production of Kiss Of The Spider Woman, and Barbara Streisand's support of the boycott of the state of Colorado over the anti-gay amendment to the state's constitution.

The December 12 edition of TV Guide gave a cheer to Richard Gere for getting things going by signing on the HBO production of Randy Shilts' AIDS chronicle And The Band Played On. The film had been passed over by two networks and several actors when, after Richard Gere took the first step, a number of other stars reportedly signed on to the film.

In case you missed them, copies of the articles I've noted are available at Gifts of Athena and the Lesbian-Gay Community Services Center.

Finally, on behalf of the entire GayWaves staff, I wish you safe, happy holiday and most importantly, a new year of gay, lesbian and bisexual freedom.
